Socket Testing
How to Test an Openreach Master Socket (Single Socket)
If you're troubleshooting a fault, our support team may ask you to run a master socket test. It moves your connection to the test socket behind the faceplate, which rules out your internal wiring. This video shows you how on a single-slot socket.
Step by step
- 1Start at your single-slot master socket, which has a micro filter already connected.
- 2Remove the micro filter from the socket.
- 3Undo the faceplate. There's either a screw on each side, or clips you can press.
- 4Pull the faceplate away to reveal the test socket on the right-hand side.
- 5Plug the filter you removed into that test socket. That completes the master socket test.
Common questions
Why am I being asked to test the master socket?
The test socket sits before your home's internal wiring. Connecting to it tells us whether a fault is on the Openreach line or somewhere in your own extension wiring, which helps us fix it faster.
Is it safe to remove the faceplate?
Yes, the lower faceplate is designed to come off. Undo the two screws or press the clips, and keep the screws safe. You're not touching any of the permanent Openreach wiring behind it.
What if my socket has two slots instead of one?
Then you have a pre-filtered socket, which is tested slightly differently. See our guide on testing a pre-filtered master socket for that one.
