Gigabit broadband is worth considering if several people download large files, stream and work online at the same time. It is usually unnecessary for one or two 4K streams, browsing and ordinary video calls. Check your upload speed and home network before paying for a faster download tier.
What does 1000 Mbps broadband mean?
A gigabit is 1,000 megabits per second. Mbps describes bits, while file sizes normally use bytes: eight bits make one byte. A theoretical 1,000 Mbps connection can move 125 megabytes per second before overheads. The advertised package figure, address-specific estimate and usable speed at a device can differ.
The connection is shared across the home. A gigabit package does not deliver a separate gigabit to each phone or television. It also does not promise 1,000 Mbps upload: many full-fibre packages have a lower upload speed, including packages delivered over Openreach. Compare both figures.
What can you do faster with gigabit?
Downloading a large game or project can take less time if the server and your equipment can keep up. More capacity can also leave room for other people while a download runs. The applications themselves still have the same requirements.
| Usable download rate | Ideal download time |
|---|---|
| 100 Mbps | 13 minutes 20 seconds |
| 300 Mbps | About 4 minutes 27 seconds |
| 1,000 Mbps | 1 minute 20 seconds |
Calculation: 10 GB × 8 ÷ Mbps, using decimal units. These are theoretical examples, not speed tests or an Inspire performance promise. Real transfers take longer because of overheads, Wi-Fi, the remote server, storage and other traffic.
Who actually benefits?
- A large household where downloads overlap with several streams and video calls.
- People downloading large games, video projects or datasets frequently.
- A household that values shorter download waits enough to justify the total contract cost.
For cloud backups and uploading video, the upload tier can matter more than gigabit download. For gaming, check latency, jitter and packet loss: a larger download number does not automatically lower ping. See our gaming and streaming guide.
When is a slower package enough?
Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for one 4K stream; Disney+ recommends 25 Mbps. Ordinary streaming does not need a gigabit line. A stable 100 to 300 Mbps connection can suit many households, depending on simultaneous use and upload requirements. Use our speed chooser rather than assuming everyone needs the top tier.
Check these five things before upgrading
- Run a wired speed test while the home is busy. If the wired connection is fine but the bedroom is slow, investigate Wi-Fi first.
- Check the estimated download and upload speeds for your address, not just the plan name.
- Check your router, Ethernet ports, cables and devices. A gigabit Ethernet link carries less than 1,000 Mbps of application data once overheads are included.
- Compare the full contract cost, including setup, add-ons and any scheduled rises.
- Confirm installation requirements and any change to your digital phone service.
Inspire Telecom's current broadband range includes a gigabit-tier option. Availability depends on your address. Compare a smaller tier alongside it; the sensible upgrade is the one that solves a problem you actually have.
Frequently asked questions
Is gigabit broadband the same as full fibre?
No. Full fibre describes the connection technology, with fibre all the way to the premises. Gigabit describes a speed tier. Full fibre can be sold at much lower speeds, and a gigabit package can be delivered using another network technology.
Will gigabit make video calls better?
Only if inadequate download capacity is contributing to the problem. Calls also depend on upload capacity, Wi-Fi, latency, jitter and packet loss. A stable slower connection with enough upload can work well.
Does gigabit broadband have gigabit upload?
Not necessarily. Read the upload figure for the exact package and address. Full fibre does not automatically mean symmetric download and upload.
Can I get 1000 Mbps on Wi-Fi?
It depends on the router, device, distance and interference. A gigabit line does not guarantee a gigabit Wi-Fi speed. Test wired performance separately from wireless coverage.
