For one 4K stream, Netflix recommends at least 15 Mbps and Disney+ recommends 25 Mbps. Allow that much usable download speed for each simultaneous stream, then leave room for calls, browsing and downloads. You do not need gigabit broadband just to watch 4K.
The important measurement is the speed reaching your television or streaming device while the household is busy. A fast line at the router can still buffer on a television connected through weak Wi-Fi.
How many Mbps do Netflix and Disney+ recommend?
| Service | HD | 4K UHD |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | 3 Mbps for 720p; 5 Mbps for 1080p | 15 Mbps or higher |
| Disney+ | 5 Mbps | 25 Mbps |
These figures come from Netflix's internet-speed guidance and Disney+'s recommendations. They apply to the individual stream. Other services can have different requirements, so check the app you actually use.
How much speed does the whole household need?
Add up activities happening together. Two Netflix 4K streams account for at least 30 Mbps; two Disney+ 4K streams account for 50 Mbps. Four Disney+ streams would account for 100 Mbps before any other activity. These are calculations from the published recommendations, not measurements of a typical family.
A video call also uses upload capacity. A console downloading a game or a laptop syncing a large file can use much of the remaining bandwidth. As a planning example, a stable 100 Mbps connection can suit two 4K streams with ordinary browsing, whereas 150 to 300 Mbps gives a busier home more room for overlapping activity. Those ranges are practical starting points, not guarantees.

Why does 4K buffer on a fast connection?
- Test the streaming device's connection while the problem is happening, rather than testing a phone next to the router.
- If possible, connect the television by Ethernet. If that fixes playback, improve the Wi-Fi before changing your broadband package.
- Pause large downloads or cloud backups and compare the result.
- Check that your subscription, device, display and programme support 4K, and that the app's quality setting allows it.
- If several devices struggle even on Ethernet, contact your provider with the test times and results.
Our Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers placement and mesh systems. Full fibre can offer more line capacity, but it cannot remove every in-home Wi-Fi bottleneck.
Choosing a package with Inspire Telecom
Inspire Telecom supplies UK broadband packages with different download and upload speeds. Start with the activities you need to run together, then compare current plans and check your address. Availability and the estimate for your property matter more than buying the largest advertised number.
Frequently asked questions
Is 25 Mbps enough for 4K streaming?
It meets Disney+'s recommendation for one 4K stream and exceeds Netflix's 15 Mbps recommendation. That is usable speed at the streaming device, not a promise that a 25 Mbps package can support everything else in the home at the same time.
Is 100 Mbps enough for two 4K streams?
Usually, if the connection is stable and both devices receive enough speed. Two Disney+ 4K streams need about 50 Mbps under its published recommendation, leaving some capacity on a usable 100 Mbps connection. Downloads, Wi-Fi interference and other activity can still cause buffering.
Do I need gigabit broadband to watch 4K?
No. One or two 4K streams do not require gigabit broadband. Gigabit can make sense for frequent large downloads or a very busy household, but upgrading the package will not automatically fix weak Wi-Fi at the television.
Does a faster broadband package improve picture quality?
Only if a lack of usable bandwidth is limiting the stream. Your streaming subscription, the programme's available resolution, device support and app settings also determine picture quality. Once those requirements and the service's speed recommendation are met, extra speed does not create a higher-quality version of the same stream.
